Learning More About Electricity -- From the Lineman Speakers Bureau
Kansas City Power & Light wants to help all children be safe around
electricity. That's why our retired linemen -- the workers children
often see in KCP&L trucks and on utility poles -- formed the Lineman
Speakers Bureau. Linemen know electrical hazards inside and out.
And they know the importance of safety around electrical equipment.
The
Lineman Speakers Bureau offers electrical safety presentations to
elementary schools in areas served by KCP&L. Presentations target specific age groups to help teach
safety concepts. Although the preferred group size is 25 to 30 students,
the speakers gladly offer more than one presentation a day.
The one-hour presentation includes a video and electrical safety demonstrations.
Children learn about the electrical equipment they often see in
their neighborhoods, and the presenters stress the importance of
playing away from power lines, transformers and other potentially
dangerous electrical equipment.
Following a question-and-answer period, if time permits, one lucky student will dress up in lineman gear. At the end of the presentation, children
receive age-appropriate handouts and other items that reinforce
the messages they've just heard.
KCP&L invites younger children to join Sparky and Electra for their
tour of electrical safety inside and outside the home. Sparky and
Electra come to you on a short animated video produced especially
for children ages 3 to 6. Retired KCP&L employees show the video
and then review the electrical safety messages, like properly using
an electrical outlet and never playing on padmount transformers.
The presenters use Sparky and Electra hand puppets when interacting
with the children. They finish the 30-minute presentation by involving the
children in a song learned during the video. Handouts for the children
include a coloring book, crayons and stickers. The daycare provider keeps a copy of the video and the cassette.
If you teach in the greater Kansas City area or surrounding communities
served by KCP&L, and you'd like to set up a presentation either by
the Lineman Speakers Bureau or Sparky and Electra, please email
the Program Coordinator.
