Water Heater
Heating water for your household accounts for approximately 14% of your utility bill. You need hot water for baths, washing clothes and dishes, but there are things you can do to save on the energy it takes to heat that water.
- If your water heater is over 10 years old you may consider replacing it because it operates at less then 50% efficiency
- Use a "water heater blanket" to insulate the water heater and keep the heat from escaping into the room
- Lower the thermostat to 120 degrees - this still gives you plenty of hot water and it keeps you safe from burns
- Take showers instead of baths because they use much less water
- Install low-flow shower heads and fix any leaky faucets
