Spas, Hot Tubs and Pools
Spas and Hot Tubs are a great way to relax and entertain. Pools are refreshing in the summer and a great way to exercise. Since they are usually considered a luxury item, most owners don't worry about how much energy they need to run, but there are ways to cut energy costs depending on how efficiently they are used.
For instance:
- Cover a hot tub when not being used. If the water is heated using electricity, a cover can save about $50 in energy over a year
- Turn off the heater to your hot tub or spa when you are not using it. It costs over $1 per day to keep the water at 100 degrees. Every degree you can lower the thermostat saves money and energy
- Build a wind break (fence or bushes) so the heater doesn't have to work so hard on windy days
- Remove debris or scale frequently from your pool filter or hot tub heat exchanger
