Safety Presentations for Parents and Children
As any parent knows, some of the smallest hazards in the home can
be dangerous temptations for little ones. That's why KCP&L created
"A Child's Eye View of Safety," a program designed to help make
homes safe for children.
Presented
in conjunction with the Burnett Burn Center at the University of
Kansas Medical Center, "A Child's Eye View" discusses techniques
for child-proofing homes, burn and accident prevention, electrical
safety and poison control. This 30-minute slide presentation can
help parent groups, child care providers or other interested groups
educate themselves about home safety.
For children ages 3 to 6, KCP&L lets two adventuresome squirrels,
Sparky and Electra, deliver the message about electrical safety.
Brought to life in a short video presentation, Sparky and Electra
help youngsters learn about potential safety hazards such as playing
on pad-mounted transformers and using an electrical outlet properly.
Retired KCP&L employees show the video and then review the electrical
safety messages.
The presenters use Sparky and Electra hand puppets when interacting
with the children. They finish the presentation by involving the
children in a song learned during the video. Handouts for the children
include a coloring book, crayons, stickers and a plastic bag. Child-care
providers receive a copy of the video and a cassette with the song
after the presentation.
Kansas City area schools and day-care centers can request a visit
from Sparky and Electra. The requested group size is no more than
20 children, and the speakers will be happy to offer the presentation
more than once during their visit.
If you are in the area served by KCP&L and you're interested in
a visit from Sparky and Electra, please contact the Program Coordinator by email. If you would like to arrange a
presentation of "A Child's Eye View of Safety," please call 816-556-4434.
