Ceiling and Room Fans

It costs about the same to run a ceiling fan as it does a 100-watt bulb - pennies a day. With a ceiling or room fan you don't have to use as much energy to cool or heat your home. You can raise the thermostat in the summer or lower it in the winter to save 3% to 5% on your electricity bill and still be just as comfortable.

Here are some tips for the most effective use of fans:

  • No need to keep them on when you're not home or using the room since they cool your body rather than the room
  • Make sure the blades are moving in the right direction
    • Blades should turn to circulate the warm are downward in winter
    • Turn the blades to pull air up and away from you in the summer
  • Use the right size fan for the room - generally a minimum 36" diameter fan for 100 sqare foot room
  • Ceiling fans need a minumum height of 7 feet, 8 or 9 feet is best results
